Escuelita de Nosara
Escuelita de Nosara is a non-profit organisation that provides creative educational opportunities for children in Nosara, Costa Rica. Every year from January to February they run a summer school programme for children that provides a variety of art, dance and sports classes allowing the children access to creative expression they don't get in school. In the regular primary school the children have no art classes and classes are managed in a strict manner. At the summer school they are encouraged to follow their interests, express themselves, and leave their uniforms at the door. 2011 included classes in shell-art, leaf-printing, trapeze, raft-building and fashion. Eco-consiousness is also cultivated through nature activities, videos and art from recycled materials. The three groups of children ranging in ages from 5-15 do a culminating performance at the end of the camp.
The camps run for four weeks, Monday-Friday, noon to four pm at Santa Marta school. Transportation for area children is provided to and from camp each day by area sponsors and volunteer teachers teach the classes.
La Escuelita is able to keep running through donations and the help of volunteers. You can help by making a donation to the website, www.escuelitadenosara.org, sponsoring a child for $10 US (5000 Colones, the cost for a child to attend the summer programme), donating art supplies or becoming a volunteer in January 2012. The clothing that was donated this year from members in the community enabled the girls in the fashion class to deconstruct and remake a garment that they showcased in a fashion show at the end of camp performance.
